How to pick the right gasket
Gasket choice is one of the highest-leverage decisions you'll make for an IBC's service life. Wrong gasket = leak in weeks; right gasket = years of service. Quick guide:
| Chemistry | Recommended gasket | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Water, dilute aqueous | EPDM | Default. Cheapest. Works. |
| Food, beverage, soap | EPDM (food-grade) | Same material, food-cert sourcing. |
| Mineral oil, hydraulic fluid | Viton (FKM) | EPDM swells; Viton holds. |
| Diesel, kerosene | Viton | Same as oil. |
| Bio-diesel (long-term) | Viton + stainless bottle | HDPE permeates; gasket needs Viton. |
| Concentrated solvents | PTFE | Use stainless bottle too. |
| Strong oxidizers | PTFE | Use stainless. Gasket inert. |
| Strong caustics (pH > 13) | EPDM (replace often) | Survives but degrades faster. |
| Strong acids (pH < 1) | Viton or PTFE | Depends on specific acid. |
How to pick the right valve
The valve is the most-handled component on an IBC. Right valve = years of service; wrong valve = drip-drip-drip after a season.
- 2" ball valve (default). Fast quarter-turn open/close. Cheap. Easy to replace. Works for almost everything.
- 2" butterfly valve. Better in plumbed installations where the line is rigid. Flatter profile.
- 2" camlock C (cam-and-groove). Quick connect to hose/pump. Chemical compatibility depends on body material.
- 2" tri-clamp ball valve. Sanitary. Required for food/pharma in many cases. Pricier.
- 3" sanitary ball valve. For 550-gal stainless and high-throughput stainless installations.
Heating accessories — when winter matters
HDPE handles freeze fine; the contents may not. Heating accessories we sell:
- Silicone drum heater (275-gal): $385. Wraps around the bottle, plugs into 120V. Maintains 60-100°F. Used for glycerin, syrup, anything that solidifies in cold.
- Insulating jacket (double-layer): $220. Passive insulation; reduces freeze risk and slows thermal loss when paired with a heater.
- Bottom heat pad: $145. Sits under the pallet; heats the bottle from below.
- Thermostat probe: $35. Add to a heater for closed-loop temperature control.
- Heated hood (for top fill cap): $95. Prevents cap-freeze in outdoor winter storage.
